Pants down but not caught

My compression stockings are getting worn. Next month I am going for a wrapping session before being measured for new stockings. Lately they have been sliding down a lot during the day. The other day I came home late in the evening, I had been out with a couple of people from my Tai Chi/Qi Gong/Martial Art class and because it was so late before I hung the stocking to dry it wasn't dry enough to put on next morning so I had to put on the dirty one from the day before (I only have two stockings). So the next day it really kept sliding down. I was walking some of the way home from work and I tried as best I could to pull it up from the outside of my jeans. Wasn't working for more than a few minutes at a time. I ended up stepping into a graveyard I passed, went behind some bushes, quickly pulled my trousers down and my stocking up. No one else was there (I think), luckily. What a sight it would have been, and in a graveyard!

  1. Love that image! I dart into dark corners and store doorways sometimes to pull up...must look like a secret agent or perhaps a wino...

I'd really like to know what other people are doing for stockings, and what wrapping etc you might do before ordering new ones? My therapist wants me to wrap before ordering the next new stockings, but since she's talking about wrapping for two months in autumn, my favorite season, I'm not too thrilled by the idea. I really don't want to spend my whole life being wrapped about half the year - I did three months earlier this year, and if I do two more that's almost half the year!

Also, what sort of stockings do people wear? My therapist is trying to push me into the panty-stocking type. I have primary in my left leg and I REALLY don't want to do that - I hate wearing even normal stockings, and the idea of wearing extra-tight stockings across my waist and partway down the thigh of my good leg is really horrible too me. I don't have any swelling in my abdomen so it's not as if I need it there, the idea is to reduce swelling in the very top of my bad leg by doing this. Would really LOVE hearing what other people do! She says that "all of her other patients have panty stockings" but Japanese women like wearing stockings more than Westerners anyway so I think that's cultural more than medical.

By the way, it takes three weeks to order a stocking - they all come from Germany. Is that the same for everybody else or just something Japanese?

    1. Hi Elaine, you are brave for doing it those places. A wino, he he ;-)
About the wrapping, I totally agree with you about being wrapped half the year, it is way too much. I haven't seen your leg but I am not under the impression that it is enormous and so two months sounds like a lot. One would think that after two-three weeks it would have gone down as much as it could and you could be measured. Remember, it is always your choise. You can tell your pt you only want two weeks or whatever is good for you.
Also, why does she want you to wear pantyhose if there is no abdominal swelling? I'd say stick to your stockings if that works for you.
My stockings are made in Germany too and it can be done in as little as five days but they are my neighboring country. You can try to order it as an express order.

    2. Well, there's the issue of the part of my leg that's ABOVE the stocking - this doesn't go down, and there's a little bit of hardness just under the top of the stocking. She's trying to get rid of all of that. Japanese people have some artificial ideas about bodies and body image - foreigners are always being told we should weigh way less than we do, partly because they don't take bigger bones into account - and Japanese women are hyper about slim legs, so that may be part of it. I like the idea of compression pants and doing that some days - might be a decent compromise. My leg is still pretty soft so that might be enough.

The problem is that after I'm measured we have to wait three weeks or so for the stocking to come from Germany. So on top of the 2-3 weeks to slim it down I'd obviously have to wrap for that time too, to keep it there. In which case it might go down even more. Wish we could do rush jobs!! Also, the price hasn't gone down at all even though the Euro is so weak.

    3. Hi Elaine,
I too sometimes have a little swelling above the stocking. My pt says that when I do MLD I should make gentle strokes on the side of my body from thigh to armpit so I try to do that. That should help open up the groin area for better drainage there. Recently I started doing a speed MLD when in bed, preparing the body for some work during the night when I wear my nightgarment.

  2. Even when my stocking was brand new, it would never stay put all day - Hate that! I found a great product that keeps it put all day. Its a roll on body fixative by Jobst, called "It Stays" it washes off with water and does not irritate my Very sensitive skin. I just roll it on my skin up near the top of the stocking and put the stocking in place!

  3. You might want to just try a tight pair of compression shorts instead of using the panty hose. I have found that works ok - and you don't have to wear it every day. It's also much cheaper. The stockings with the panty and half leg more than double the cost of a single thigh-high.

    1. Yes, I was thinking perhaps of bicycle pants!

A Jobst fixative? That sounds good. Is it on their home page?

    3. Hi Laney, where can you get compression shorts? Would like to try that. Found out from my therapist tonight that she thinks I should wear the longer stockings to PREVENT getting lymphedema in my abdomen! I'm sure she's correct, but it's my body and until I have to, I don't want to do that - but working on getting the upper part of my leg down isn't a bad idea. Thanks!
